This work examines the practice of Hmong shamanism, particularly the texts recited during shamanic rituals. The Hmong do not have a written language of their own and scholars have traditionally found it difficult to gain access to the secretive world of Hmong shamans. Through extensive fieldwork conducted among White Hmong communities in Thailand, Mottin is able to present for the first time a collection of complete shamanic texts. Transcriptions of these texts are provided in both White Hmong and French. This is necessary reading matter for anyone interested in Hmong religion or shamanic studies. |
