Chanthaburi
Chanthaburi-An Ancient, Multiethnic and Significant Municipality in Southeastern Thailand, is the second work about this historic and important place.
The first book, titled The Kingdom of Phaniat and the Chong People-An Early Port City State in Modern Eastern Thailand, is a study about the almost unknown ancient Kingdom of Phaniat, which was founded by a colony of Khmer people in the early-7th century AD, close to present-day city center of Chanthaburi, and the indigenous Chong people who live in the area since the dawn of history.
This second book describes the historic events that Chanthaburi experienced since its foundation in the 12th century, beginning with its strategic location as a riverine port city in this region, the migration of Chinese and Vietnamese people to this place at the borderland between the realms of the Khmer in the east and the Siamese (Thai) to the west, pirate activities between the various Chinese kongsi organizations in the northern part of the Gulf of Siam (Thailand) and the city's distinct mix of peoples, who have settled there ever since.
When Phraya Taksin arrived at Chanthaburi in 1767, he reinforced his small army and built a flotilla to retake Ayutthaya from the Burmese. After defeating the Burmese, Taksin became the King of Siam at the new capital Thonburi. In the following decades, Chanthaburi was at the frontier of the Siam-Vietnam conflicts, and after the Paknam crisis in July 1893, the city and its port was occupied by French troops until 1905.
Apart from those important events and occurrences, this volume also explores Chanthaburi's cultural landscape to promote an understanding of how geography, ethnicity, wars and migration have shaped the city's social fabric and history.
The text is supported with some photos and drawings.
