Man from Bangkok, The
- By: Rong Wangsavun
'Rong Wongsavun was born in Chainat in rural Thailand in 1932 and moved to Bangkok to attend school. He began writing and publishing in Bangkok in the 1950s and wrote over 100 books in his long career. This is the first book of his translated into English. In his books he chronicled the lives of the urban poor in Bangkok, and the other ordinary people of Thailand. During the Vietnam War, he re- ported about the Thai women working the bars surrounding American naval and airbases. This book The Man from Bangkok, is a translation of his book On the Back of the Dog: Travels in the Golden Sunshine, a title which refers to his travels on Greyhound buses in the 1960s, and again in 1976. This book is an insightful description of San Francisco in the 1960s and 1970s. 'Rong Wongsavun was declared a "Thai National Artist" in 1995 and established a workshop for Thai writers in Chiangmai at that time. He passed away in 2009.
