Miss Siam Beauty Contests 1934 - 1938 and the first Miss Thailand Contest is a reprint of the Original thai edition with an Introduction in English. The Beauty contests were made in honor of the new constitution, a strange combination for a Westerner. It lists all the participants with their photos. A gallery of what was considered a beauty at that time.
I had to consult literature to get a handle on the subject and Ifound the solution in Wichit Wathakan's ideas to create new Thai identity by digging up indigenous cultural roots as well as linking the constitution to something sacred. Kulap Saipradit realized the that the general population outside urban areas interpreted the new ideas of democracy in term of indigenus magical conception of the world. The new concept to create citizens out of subjects was not widely understtod.
Growing up after the war I realized in hindside the pattern we were indoctrinated in the nihilist Trotskyite philosophy. In Europe at that time Hitler as well as Stalin (both nationalists) promoted indigenous cultures, in contrast to the globalists around Lenin and Trotsky who were against nationa states and traditional values of family and religion. Wichit in his time understood that concept long ahead of his time.
