Gray Wolves in Asia
Gray Wolves in Asia
- By: Asmussen, Jan
new publication in 2025
Gray Wolves in Asia: German Submarine Warfare in the Far East during World War II is a comprehensive study of German military operations in that region. This study is based on intensive archival research on technical details, the German naval bases in Southeast Asia, and the use of commercial submarines to transport essential products like tin and rubber for Germany, and mercury and technical products for Japan. The effectiveness of these maritime operations in the overall war is discussed. The author addresses the ambivalent relationship between Germany and Japan as well as the German navy’s varied experiences in cooperating with the Japanese navy and army in Southeast Asia. Maintenance and supply including technical problems are also tackled. This study also relates to the sailors themselves, their experiences with the local climate and culture.
