Siam Directory 1947, The

The Siam Directory 1947 is the latest in our series of reprinted books from the past which offered information on all aspects of life in Thailand. Earlier volumes in this series included: The 1894 Directory for Bangkok and Siam, The 1904 Traveler's Guide to Bangkok and Siam, The Siam Directory 1912, the 1913 and 1925 editions of The Directory for Bangkok and Siam, The Siam Directory 1930, and Siam in 1930. General and Medical Features is a narrower survey of just one particular aspect of life in Thailand.
These directories are a treasure trove of information for researchers who want to trace foreigners who were working in Siam/Thailand, as well as the numerous large companies operating in the country. They are an early version of the Yellow Pages, but with much more information. It may be of interest to note which com- panies were prominent before the Second World War, compared to those just after the war. It's also interesting to see what products and services were advertised in those days, as many which will be familiar to older people today have completely disappeared from the market, and younger people may never have heard of them. These directories were compiled for business people and technical specialists who wanted an introduction to Thai history, institutions, Government agencies, the economy, trade figures, the transport system, etc. They come from a time when the foreign community numbered only in the hundreds and individuals were able to know each other personally. New employees of Western companies were provided lists of people to visit. And, such selective lists, which failed to include certain persons, provided an unofficial warning to newcomers regarding whom to avoid.
